No 425 German Basil

Basil, also called king herb, has been historically documented since the 12th century in Europe, where it is widely used as a culinary spice, especially in the Mediterranean, because it stimulates the appetite and digestion. Since then, it has also become very popular elsewhere as a component of pesto, the ideal accompaniment for pasta and Caprese – a delicious combination of tomato and mozzarella. Many different-tasting varieties exist. Depending on the variety, origin and time of harvest, the essential oil sometimes has very different concentrations of, for example, strongly aromatic monoterpenes – linalool, cineol, eugenol and methyl chavicol (also called estragole), with the latter accounting for the special basil aroma with green, tea, mint and hay-like notes. After months of experimentation, we found the ideal combination by varying the types and the processing. Our basil spirit is pure pesto on the nose and palate, and therefore ideal for adding that special touch to food (pasta with pesto and caprese, of course!), dressings, desserts (be sure to try it with strawberries) and also flavouring cocktails. It’s also pure pleasure drunk neat.
