Sometimes the solution is closer than you think: while searching for local fruit, we came across a Berlin-based association with a truly commendable purpose. The dedicated members have set themselves the goal of preserving endangered orchards in Brandenburg and planting new ones. The focus is on old apple varieties typical of the region, of which they have quite a few different ones.
The Gravensteiner apple is probably one of the best known. While it used to be widely grown because of its excellent taste, it has met the fate of many other varieties that are difficult to store and susceptible to cultivation: it has been replaced by varieties that do not have these disadvantages and are therefore more attractive to the large supermarket chains. We have carefully mashed the fully ripe, hand-picked apples and, after the fermentation has subsided, slowly and gently distilled them into a classic apple brandy. It has a fine fruity bouquet typical of the variety and spicy-sweet hints on the palate reminiscent of apple strudel.
