There’s been a lot of hype about turmeric in recent years. Turmeric looks very similar to ginger and is said to have a wide range of therapeutic effects as it contains curcumin, which is also responsible for its intense yellow colour. However, hardly any of the research into these effects meets current scientific standards. As a medicinal product, turmeric root is described in the European Pharmacopoeia as “the whole dried rhizome of Curcuma longa, minus the roots and outer bark, brewed by boiling water or hot steam.” The drug is used as a traditional herbal medicine for digestive complaints, as a spice and as the ingredient that gives curry powder its colour. It’s not only turmeric’s eye-catching colour that makes it stand out: it also contains a very interesting essential oil. That’s why it was predestined for a distillate. The oil is made up of various sesquiterpene ketones known as turmerones. These essentially determine its smell, as do zingiberene and smaller amounts of α-phellandrene, sabinene, cineole, borneol and other components. This oil adds significantly to the flavour of our spirit, which is colourless, because the dye is unfortunately non-volatile and remains in the stillage. Though that shouldn’t prevent you using the Indian turmeric spirit in cooking and cocktails. The plant probably originated in India, which is still the main growing area and where we source our organic turmeric.
