No 405 Moldovan Walnut

Germanic tribes used to call neighbouring peoples with Roman roots “Walhaz”. These were the people who introduced them to the walnut, which they called “Welschnuss” to distinguish it from the domestic hazelnut. This is the origin of the name “walnut”. The walnut tree bears the Latin species epithet “regia” – meaning “royal” – because it is a truly amazing tree. Due to the tannin content, the leaves are used as a traditional herbal remedy in baths and compresses. Green walnut shells are also used to manufacture liqueur and hair dye. The cold-pressed oil from its seeds is used for cooking and in the cosmetics industry, and, last but not least, the delicious walnut kernels are a versatile, healthy foodstuff. Walnut trees flourish in the fertile black earth soils of Moldova, where seemingly endless walnut tree-lined avenues grace the landscape. That’s where we obtained the organic walnuts for our special walnut spirit, with flavours based on a variety of aliphatic alcohols and aldehydes produced by oxidative degradation of the polyunsaturated fatty acids contained in walnuts. We recommend drinking it neat for pure pleasure, using it in salad dressings and desserts, or for mixing.
