Admittedly, it was a busy company outing, but we really enjoyed it. We took the whole team out to Brandenburg and picked the apples for this brandy ourselves at the Müncheberg fruit-growing research station. And that wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Because the largest variety garden for fruit plants in Brandenburg has more than 1000 different apple varieties. These are cultivated here for scientific purposes. On the one hand, the aim is to preserve a unique genetic pool. Due to our eating habits, there are almost only a few varieties of so-called “fast food apples” left in supermarkets, which can be produced quickly and in bulk. On the other hand, research is also being carried out in Müncheberg into which varieties thrive best in which locations, even under the changed climatic conditions. These findings help fruit growers far beyond the region. During our self-picking, we tasted the varieties that were ripe at the time on site and only harvested the 17 varieties with the best aroma and taste. Back at the manufactory, we mashed them on the same day and were very excited about the result of this absolutely non-reproducible brandy. It has fine floral notes on the nose and a spicy, fruity apple character on the palate.
