One of the most exciting tasks for distillers is seeking out the best raw materials. During this search, names we’ve never heard of keep appearing on the radar and arousing our interest. One example is the ortanique. This fruit is slightly larger than the mandarin and rounded, with a strong, orange-coloured skin and an intense mandarin and orange aroma. It was first discovered in Jamaica in the 1920s and is probably the result of hybridisation between wild oranges and tangerines (a local variety of mandarin). This hybrid is now cultivated in many countries and has spread from Spain via Cyprus and Morocco to South Africa. Its name reflects its origins, as it is a combination of or(ange), tan(gerine) and either (un)ique or (Jama)ïque (for Jamaica). But it’s not only the name that reflects the ortanique’s origins – so do the flavours: the typical mandarin aroma of N-methyl anthranilic acid methyl ester predominates, together with limonene that occurs in both mandarins and oranges, blends fantastically well with the esters, aldehydes and other flavour components of the juice to create a wonderfully idiosyncratic spirit. It will delight the palate after a light summer meal, for example, and its lingering aftertaste will make you dream of southern climes.
